Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic

on the way to Las Terrenas there is about a 5 mile long stretch of planted and some beheaded palm trees.  the palm is used to make Palm Oil

the view from the top of the mountain pass was a wonderful place to watch the sunset

a young boy stopped to help give us directions

the deeply settled palm trees reminded me from a scene in The Lorax by Dr. Suess

Eric, our guide to Salto Limon caught some comfort from the Caribbean sun and hung out in the shade

happy bathing at Los Patos, Dominican Republic

Los Patos in San Rafael, Dominican Republic is a very special spot.  A river, considered to be the shortest in the country, runs with a strong current and empties right into the Pacific Ocean.  It is a spot for locals and tourist alike.  The kids in the foreground are shampooing their hair, and the young gentleman in the background is returning up the river with his inner tube that he used to ride down the river.
an afternoon on the river is not complete without Mamajuana, a traditional Dominican alcoholic beverage made of rum, wine and honey which is left to soak in a bottle with tree bark and herbs.

overlooked, but luckily found

Jimani, Dominican Republic.  While editing images from a trip to Lago Enriquillo I came across this portrait that I had previously not noticed.  After weaving our way through the busy market that takes place at the border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, we stopped to chat with some kids living in the border town.  Their smiles were infectious!

A Day in Miches, Dominican Republic

Miches is a quiet town in the northeastern region of the Dominican Republic. The town has relied heavily on it's surrounding water bodies, both rivers and ocean, to fish. Presently, Fundacion Tropicalia (Fundacion Cisneros - Cisneros Group) is working to develop the quiet area into an Eco-tourism destination. The foundation has already rehabilitated 10 schools in the area and is estimated to invest up to US$2 billion to the area creating jobs and a sustainable infrastructure in the region. Within the town, the people are incredibly welcoming and friendly. The most challenging part to getting there is the roads leading to the town itself. However, on the drive you are able to see the longest waterfall in the Dominican Republic La Jalda.
